The singer Tina Turner died at the age of 83 at her home in Switzerland after going through a long illness, according to one of her representatives on Wednesday. Often called the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” Turner was one of the greatest recording artists of all time, known for hits like “What’s Love Got to Do with It” and “(Simply) The Best.”

Born under the name Anna Mae Bullock in 1939 in Tennessee, United States, she was a singer, songwriter and actress. His international fame began in the mid-1950s when he began performing with the band Kings of Rhythm. In it was also her husband, the composer Ike Turner. However, in those years she did not carry the name with which she became popular but called herself Little Ann.

It was not until 1960 that the artist introduced herself for the first time as Tina Turner and since then her fame has grown to become global. However, at the same time, a life plagued by violence and abuse was also growing, since her partner beat her during all the years they lived together.

As it was later learned, Ike was addicted to cocaine and it was common for him to hit his partner when he returned home after several days without showing up. That led to the couple and the artistic duo separating in the mid-1970s. Finally, in 1978 the singer achieved a final divorce, after 16 years as a couple with the composer.

After the divorce, Tina Turner embarked on a solo career that did not have the best repercussions during the early 1980s. Although she recorded several songs and participated in artistic projects, it was not until 1985 that she regained public recognition with the Private Dancer album. It not only sold 5 million copies in the United States but generated 20 million more in the rest of the world, which caused a new wave of popularity for the singer.

Around the same time, Turner accepted several acting roles in films, the best remembered being Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, starring Mel Gibson. In the film, she played the role of Aunty Entity and was praised by critics for her work. In addition, he won some awards in the field and that helped further prop up his career.

As early as the 1990s, Turner continued to produce records and shows around the world. However, in 2000, when he was 61, he decided to leave the stage. During the following eight years, the singer prioritized her private life and did not frequently appear in the media again. But that stage culminated in 2008 when he began a tour of the United States and Europe.

For five more years, Turner continued with his career but finally, in 2013, he retired for good. That year he also decided to renounce his US citizenship so that he could settle in Switzerland. She lived the last decade there, where she found peace of mind to cope with a disease that would afflict her until her death.
