The start of the intense polo season in Sotogrande began last Friday, with a large influx of public, with the tournaments organized by the Iberian Polo Tour, led by Pelayo Berazadi, a member of the historic Spanish team, together with Nico Álvarez, Luis Domecq and Nico Ruiz Guiñazu who were proclaimed world champions last November in the United States, for the first time in the history of this sport in Spain.
This year as a novelty, 4 of the 8 teams will be captained by women and the 5 members of the Spanish national team, proclaimed world champion last November in Florida, will participate. The Iberian Polo Tour will be held until April 30 with the ‘José Ignacio Domecq Memorial’, ‘Jerez Polo Cup’, ‘Spanish Championship’, ‘Duque de Alba Memorial’ and ‘Andalucía Championship’ cups.
Likewise, in May the ‘Negrita Cup’ will be held at the Real Club de Polo de Barcelona and in June the ‘Copa del Rey’ tournament will be held on the field of the Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro in Madrid.
In August of this year, the novelty of the Sotogrande 60th Anniversary Tournament ‘Padres e Hijos’ organized by the Iberian Polo Tour was introduced and in which in previous editions up to 9 teams between the ages of 6 and 15 participated.
To close the year, Sotogrande promotes this sport in autumn, positioning itself as a key destination also at this time when teams from different parts of Europe come to play the Iberian Polo Tour Tournaments, chasing the climate and the quality of its fields. In addition to the Iberian Polo tour tournaments, the season in Sotogrande increases its offer with the celebration of up to nine more tournaments, where the best national and international polo players will participate.
The most important ones that will be held at the Ayala polo club will be the Spanish Open (June 15-25) and the Sotogrande International Polo Tournament (July 24-August 26), considered among the three most important international tournaments.
